And it's an easy drive from San Antonio, Austin, and Corpus Christi. If it weren't for the slow border crossing, I could make it in 6 hours from Austin. Haven't been to Monterrey since I was a kid. I recall that the mountains were even more spectacular than the U.S. Rockies. Also, once you're up in the mountains just south of the city, there's an area I believe locals call "Little Switzerland". It looked more like a mountainous rain forest to me.
