Manipal gets vaccination record-keeping platform
Quote:
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Bhat said that many parents from migrant communities (55 %-75 %) lost their child’s vaccination card and were unaware of the complete 20 vaccinations schedule. Thus, only 25 % of migrant children got complete vaccination hindering the country’s progress to reduce child mortality from vaccination preventable deaths.
To solve this problem, the Innovation Centre at MAHE, the Community Medicine Department, Kasturba Medical College (KMC) and the Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) had developed a novel digital and visual platform to record vaccination. This included a mobile app for smart phones, where healthcare workers entered vaccination data.
The data is backed up on a secure Cloud server and also stored on a NFC smart card and provided to mothers along with a “HealthGate Passport” documenting vaccination dates. This entire package costs less than ₹ 200 per child, while it recorded the child’s entire vaccination history.

Quote:
“Such collaborations with medical and engineering colleges are essential to develop innovative ideas and solve difficult problems in the healthcare sector,” he said.

Their solution was to build a TeleHealth platform for non-contact monitoring of vital signs such as heart rate, respiratory rate and blood oxygen concentration using just a phone camera or webcam at home. “This cross-platform application avoids reliance on contact-based pulse oximeters,” Ms. Kamath told “This could be further developed into a telemedicine platform, wherein doctors and hospital administrations can remotely identify the progress of the patients. This is useful in prevention of transfer of COVID-19 to healthcare professionals,” said Mohammad Zuber, assistant director (innovations), Manipal Institute of Technology.

Manipal students win MIT COVID-19 challenge
Quote:
Three students of Manipal Institute of Technology - Akshatha Kamath (3rd year CSE), Shubham Rateria (CCE Batch of 19’) and Adri Rajaraman (ECE Batch of 19’) - participated in the event and pitched their idea in the initial session. They teamed up with Melia Watson, Washington DC (Respiratory therapist, MBA), Hsiang Wei Hu, Taiwan (co-founder of Acusense Biomed) and Mariane Melo, UK (MD).
They narrowed down to the problem of overcrowded hospitals with inappropriate admissions, whereas less than 5% of the average population under 50 years of age requires hospitalisation. Their solution was to build a Tele Health platform for non-contact monitoring of vital signs, such as heart rate, respiratory rate and blood oxygen concentration using just a phone camera, or webcam at home.
Over the weekend, they worked on the proof of concept, prototypes and preliminary vision for execution. Throughout the event, several mentors across the US with diverse expertise were available to improve the idea and business proposal.
The team then reconvened to present their work in the form of a three minute pitch followed by a Q and A session with the judges.
The event saw 1,500 participants from 75-odd countries and more than 250 mentors. The team were declared as winners of their Track - ‘who to test and when’.
They will now have an opportunity to co-develop and implement their solution with the support of partners. The team looks forward to improve the accuracy of their solution and incorporate it into Tele-medicine platforms.

MAHE launches ‘ICH Outcome Predictor’
Quote:
The specialised software, 'ICH outcome predictor', was jointly developed by Kumudha Health Tech Private Limited, a spinoff of MAHE and incubated in MUTBI and the department of Neurosurgery, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, MAHE.
The ICH predictive model was developed using Machine learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to predict mortality and morbidity in Spontaneous Intracerebral Hemorrhage. It enables doctors to take data driven decisions that will improve quality of life in this severely disabling disease.
The machine learning model uses a large dataset of patients with intracranial haemorrhage from the in-house ICH register maintained by the Department of Neurosurgery, Kasturba Medical College. The data set having more than 1,00,000 records was analysed using intelligent machine learning algorithms to pick 17 attributes which impact outcome. These attributes were then processed with feedback from Neurosurgeons at KMC Manipal. This innovative product is an outcome of collaborative work of the Department of Neurosurgery and M/s Kududha Health Tech Pvt Ltd. It is an online web-based prediction tool easily accessible at on http://ich.kumudha.tech/ to provide beside results when patients are admitted.
