As a 'victim' of the South shore plan, there is real frustration in the neighbourhood.
The Westboro Beach neighbourhood has lost access to the waterfront, not just at the beach. This may also have in impact on the Kitchissippi Winter Trail since there's no access to the north side of SirJAM from the existing trail maintenance equipment storage area.
The delays at starting the actual beach building construction (as opposed to fencing off access) means there will be another summer without beach access. And they have now closed off access to the water's edge. All crossings between Kitchissippi station and Island Park have also been closed off. For those of us trying to get to the river at Island Park, the staging area for the bridge construction is taking up more of the waterfront area beside the bridge.
This is a perfect storm of failure by the city, and the NCC, with KEV as the LRT developer (and also building the city's underpass to the waterfront at Churchill). With all construction happening at once, and all being delayed by months/years, the promised access to the waterfront paths is not happening.
Those coming by car to use the beach can just go to another beach. Those biking through will notice the detours on the MUP but won't really comprehend the effect it has had on the thousands of people for whom this area is our green space.
