Obviously I think it’s a shame if someone lives here and doesn’t ever learn French, but people are generally forgiving. After all, you have to start somewhere, and it’s not like you can become fluent in French by living in Toronto or Edmonton.

My nephew moved to Sutton, Quebec about five years ago to be close to his elderly parents. One has since died, and the other (my sister) is now in a nursing home. He works remotely for the city of Calgary (IS department), so employment is not a problem for him. Since he is in the townships, he can get by as an anglophone, but has been making an honest effort to learn French (more so than his parents did). I wouldn't say that he is bilingual, but he is able to make his needs known to any unilingual francophone he comes across.
