Not surprised there is consideration about this as a future step. The story has a couple of photos of the townhouse component of Roxborough.

With the redevelopment of a former CityHousing enclave into a mixed-income community in Hamilton’s east end underway, Coun. Sam Merulla is now looking to the northeast.

The longtime Ward 4 representative hopes to set the stage for a similar revamp of a subsidized townhouse complex at Oriole Crescent.

His idea is to rezone the low-slung area just south of Britannia Avenue and west of the Red Hill Valley Parkway to allow greater building heights and density.

Housing with a spectrum of market prices and rents would blend with rebuilt CityHousing rent-geared-to-income units, emulating the model of nearby Roxborough Park, the project that’s under construction.

“It really is an incredible opportunity to maximize the footprint with intensification of a mixed-use residential development,” said Merulla, who is retiring at the end of this term.

That would involve the demolition of the 214 CityHousing townhouse units in the Oriole area and potentially finding a developer to incorporate them anew into a denser community.
