The Company has leased/allotted land to 11 Units in the SEZ. Presently, 9 companies viz ONGC Mangalore Petrochemicals Limited (OMPL), Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserve Limited (ISPRL), Syngene International Ltd (Syngene) (a subsidiary of M/s Biocon Ltd, Catàsynth Speciality Chemicals Private Ltd, Cardolite Specialty Chemicals India LLP(Cardolite), Gadre Marine Exports Pvt Ltd (Gadre), Ulka India (ULKA), Yashaswi Fish Meal and Oil Company (Yashaswi) & , Authentic Ocean Treasure (AOT)had already commenced its operations, while the other 2 entities viz., JBF Petrochemicals Ltd and Anthea Aromatics are in the process of setting up units in the SEZ and are in different stages of implementation.

LNG Alliance, togetherwith Government of Karnataka and NMPT, has proposed to undertake the conceptualization of commercial project structure for developing a major LNG import terminal in Karnataka, with an initial capaciy of 4 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA), and the potential for expansion up to 8 MPTA in line with the estimated demand increase over the next 20 years.
In addition, this import and regasification terminal would also have the ISO LNG containerisation and LNG truck loading facility for serving he industrial and transportation secor. This could also be India's first dedicated LNG bunkering facility that would provide LNG as fuel for ships visiting the NMPT port and bunkering shuttles to the West Coast of India.

ONGC, partners to splash USD 6.2 billion on green energy projects

NEW DELHI: India's top oil explorer ONGC and its partners will invest USD 6.2 billion (Rs 50,000 crore) in green energy projects to produce carbon-free hydrogen and green ammonia as part of an ambitious decarbonization drive, officials said.

State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has signed a pact with Greenko, one of India's largest renewable energy companies, to form a 50:50 joint venture for green energy projects.

The JV will set up 5.5-7 gigawatts (GW) of solar and wind power projects, and use electricity generated from such plants to split water in an electrolyzer to produce green hydrogen, which in turn would be used for manufacturing green ammonia, they said.

The renewable plants together with Greenko's pump storage power generation system will give 1.4 GW of round-the-clock (RTC) electricity that would be used to produce 0.18 million tonne of green hydrogen per annum (about 20 kg per hour).

This hydrogen will be mixed with nitrogen to produce 1 million tonne per annum of green ammonia, which in the initial years will be exported to Europe, Japan and Korea and used within the country when the market develops, they said.

Officials said the renewable energy component of the chain would cost about USD 5 billion while the hydrogen and ammonia plant will cost USD 1.2 billion.

ONGC is looking to set up the hydrogen and ammonia plants, which are likely to start production in 2026, on the west coast, preferably near Mangalore, where it has an oil refinery.

In case the land is not available, the project may shift to Gujarat, they said.

While hydrogen is the cleanest known fuel with zero carbon emission, it is difficult to transport and a vast majority of its production globally is used in-situ (onsite).

And for these reasons, ONGC is looking at manufacturing green ammonia from hydrogen.

So, this could be fourth Green Hydrogen Plant - ReNew Power, ACME Cleantech Solutions, Petronas Hydrogen, ONGC Greenko.

The BS VI upgradation project, worth around ₹1,830 crore, will facilitate production of ultra-pure environment-friendly BS-VI grade fuel. The seawater desalination plant, set up at a cost of around ₹680 crore, will help reduce dependency on freshwater sources and ensure regular supply of hydrocarbons and petrochemicals throughout the year, it said.

Ganjimath Export Promotion Park (EPIP) land has been allotted to 45 enterprises at present. About 16 enterprises are functioning in it. Some are under construction and will start in a few months. Most of the active industries are export related industries. Mainly there are industries related to chips, cashew nuts, plastic, medicine, sheets, bags. About 4 thousand employees are working in the total industrial area.

Plastic Park Expected Ganji Math

The Central Chemicals and Fertilizers Department has given the green signal to the “Plastic Park” project which is a part of the Make in India project to be implemented in Ganji Math environment. 1 thousand crores in about 104 acres of land. The project is being realized at cost. In addition to plastic manufacturing, there is an intention to give more emphasis to plastic recycling technology.

It is strange that government has done everything in Canara Industrial Area but nothing in Ganijimatt EPIP which is closer to the port. But I think once Plastic Park materializes, road to NMPT will get widened as a part of that project.

“Seven companies ACME Solar, ABC Cleantech, ReNew Power, Avaada, JSW Green Hydrogen, PETRONAS Hydrogen and O2 Power have evinced interest to invest in Karnataka for green hydrogen manufacturing. Four of them have been cleared for investment by the State High-Level Committee and three are at the MoU stage,” he said.

Reddy further elaborated that the total investment size (in green hydrogen) is expected to be around Rs 1.5 lakh crore. The investors have sought proximity to the Mangaluru port because they will convert green hydrogen to green ammonia and export it.

“The land requirement for setting up a green hydrogen plant is around 100 to 300 acres. Their main requirement is that they should have a regular supply of solar and wind energy for which they will set up renewable energy units across the state. The green energy will be transmitted to the hydrogen plants at Mangaluru through the transmission lines of Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd or/and Power Grid Corporation of India Limited,” he said.

Of the total investment made at the event of Rs 9.81 lakh crore, nearly one-third was earmarked for green hydrogen, with nine green hydrogen production proposals worth Rs 2.86 lakh crore received. The state government is setting up India’s first green hydrogen cluster in Mangalore to increase the state’s share in the country’s total green hydrogen exports.

Reasons for choosing Mangalore

As for why Mangalore is considered for green hydrogen projects, firstly the availability of water and the presence of a port in Mangalore makes it a preferred location for these plants, explains Doddabasavaraju, Managing Director of Karnataka Udyog Mitra. Also about 220 acres of land and infrastructure are available in Mangalore under Special Economic Zone (MSEZ). Thus, Doddabasavaraju says that Mangalore is being chosen due to these factors.

Mainly meeting the land requirement for a cluster is a challenge, but individual plant proposals are in the range of 200-300 acres each. Thus, Doddabasavaraju says that new projects are currently looking at the need for at least 80-100 acres to set up a plant and start operations.

Why Mangalore is emerging as hotspot for green hydrogen projects

Many of the proposals received by Karnataka pertain to setting up electrolyser plants in the Mangalore region and storing the hydrogen produced in the form of ammonia. This is because storing hydrogen, which is the lightest element, as liquid or gas requires high pressure and extremely low temperatures. Liquid ammonia can be stored at -33°C.

“All these projects that have come are looking at exporting hydrogen,” said Gunjan Krishna, Karnataka’s commissioner for industrial development, at a recent press conference. Water availability and the presence of a port in Mangalore makes it a preferred location for these plants, explains Doddabasavaraju, managing director of Karnataka Udyog Mitra, the single-window agency for industrial project approvals. Besides, the added attraction is that about 220 acres of land and infrastructure is available under the Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ).

He said, “During the Global Investors Meet in Bengaluru, Rs 2 lac crore investments were received for renewable energy, hydrogen fuel and production of ammonia from sea water. The preparation has been done for the infrastructure and land required for the project is ready. The clearance has been given to 3 renewable energy companies during the state high level committee meeting and 2-3 companies have already decided to take up work during March-April. The project of hydrogen fuel and production of ammonium from sea water will come up in international level.
