Since someone asked, I took a look at the violent crime from 2002 to 2022 around both the Chicago Red Line stop and Grand Red Line stop. I created a 2x2 square to search from where the station was the center point. That is going east 1 block, west 1 block, north 1 block, and south 1 block. Each block in Chicago is a furlong or 660 feet, which is 0.125 miles exactly.

I calculated percent share of the overall violent crime in Near North Side in those areas. Around the Chicago stop in 2021 it was 5.57% which is actually lower than 2010 - 2012, 2015, and 2017-2020. It's almost identical to 2016. This year so far thru 8 days ago it's 7.52% which is still lower than 2018 and 2020.

For Grand Red Line, we have to remember that some of the Hubbard St bars are part of this square. It has a higher percentage share than Chicago Red Line which makes sense once you consider there's a number of bars within this area. The 2021 percentage share is still lower than 2012, 2014, 2015, 2017-2019 and almost identical to 2016. So far this year it's pretty high but similar to 2014.

Since 2011, these 2 areas together have made up around 15-20% of all Near North Side violent crime. The Chicago one is lower and it's easy to conflate some of the higher percentages with the red line, even though there's a bunch of nightlife near one of them that draws people from all over.

Looking at an overall incident perspective, not taking into account population..

Chicago Red Line 2x2 block
2021: 103 violent crimes
2020: 120
2019: 149
2018: 179
2017: 136
2016: 95
2015: 80
2014: 82
2013: 77
2012: 120
2011: 124
2010: 123
2009: 101
2008: 114
2007: 115
2006: 113
2005: 96
2004: 96
2003: 95
2002: 91

2021 isn't the lowest year here but it's still lower than 10 other years and close to 5 others. At this rate, 2022 may end up with around 120.

Grand Red Line 2x2 block
2021: 197 violent crimes
2020: 94
2019: 238
2018: 228
2017: 226
2016: 182
2015: 144
2014: 182
2013: 154
2012: 158
2011: 141
2010: 123
2009: 117
2008: 133
2007: 143
2006: 147
2005: 115
2004: 116
2003: 126

2021 was one of the highest but 2017-2019 were still worse for that. At this rate, this year may end up with around 225 which is similar to 2017 thru 2019.
2002: 114
