Still a little disappointed that "heritage protection" involves saving the facades only - they are about to tear down a structure that was built in 1863 and rebuilt with 3 storeys added on after a 1912 fire just because it 'fits the plan'. Same with the Acadian Recorder building, which was built in 1900 and still retains much of its original character.
As happy as I am that the site is finally being built on, and that the facades are being saved, I can't help but think that Halifax could do better in retaining more of its historic buildings. These two buildings were both important as headquarters of Halifax print media, strategically located between Province House and City Hall, and thus are significant parts of Halifax's history. Yet they are not viewed as being important enough to preserve any more than their facades.
Regardless, I accept the reality and am looking forward to the finished product and the revival of the George-Barrinton corner, which has been vacant for 30-some years.

100 percent. Though I don't think anything of historic value remains
inside the Dennis, so no loss there. But I do think this development could cede a bit more visual dominance to the older buildings, if that makes sense.
