1780 E Broadway (Commercial-Broadway Safeway) - UDP

Architectural Excellence Earns Urban Design Panel Support For Grandview Woodland’s Growing Community Heart
1780 E Broadway (Safeway Site)
This is arguably the most anticipated proposal in Vancouver this year, and in pre-COVID times, this Urban Design Panel meeting likely would have been filled to capacity. It has been nearly four years since we first saw the plans to transform the Safeway across from the Commercial-Broadway station, and the passions they evoked. I still remember the vocal opposition those five 12 – 24 floor buildings faced at that applicant-led event, but Darren recalls the bacon-wrapped chicken skewers much better.
Which is understandable, as though the initial density remains roughly the same, over the years there have been several updates which have cut back the amount of towers. This has preserved more sunlight and views through the greater community, but caused a growth spurt in the remaining structures. Granted, 24 – 30 floor buildings might seem insignificant when compared to the 60 – 80 floor towers that are planned at Burnaby’s Gilmore, Lougheed, and Metrotown stations, but this is Vancouver.
