I always associated poppy wearing with public school brainwashing; us private school kids never wore them. Although my grandfather fought for Scotland in WWI, losing two of his siblings, I feel no attachment to the war. As a nonconformist, I never wore the poppy to work, which as a white Canadian is kind of rare?
