I think of the actual West Coast as only being the coastal parts of BC extending a little bit inland. As a point of comparison, Reno is closer to the Pacific than a lot of the BC interior. Would somebody living in Reno say they live on the West Coast?
Yep, great point, which I almost mentioned already but didn't.

Another example would be someone living in remote far north Manitoba. That's way more "The North" than "The Prairies".

Similarly, my gf's family (pure Anglos with deep roots in a sea-oriented town on the shores of the Gulf of St. Lawrence) should probably answer "Maritimes" rather than "Quebec". (If the goal is to get some sort of cultural sample.)
