I lived in one of those giant apartment towers in China when I lived on the east coast. Ugly as they are, the community that organically developed with pop-up markets, kids playing, etc., was pretty fun. People had such a strong desire to get outside (and the culture has a lot to do with it) that you actually got to know your neighbors.

That said, they are ugly. No denying that. And the lower floors get *no* sun.
