YMMV but I find that most roofers who are well reviewed are not far off the mark. The ones that trouble me are the personal recc's of friends of friends. Somehow the word of mouth doesn't really translate to quality and price. Because, who are you going to complain to?
The biggest problem I see nowadays is that most websites on the first page are there not because of quality reviews but because of aggressive link building and all they do is sell your inquiry to the highest bidder. How can you possibly get a fair shake that way?
If you can't tell the difference you might need a refresher in online search.
