The Loop still has a Catholic church. And it also has grocery stores, bookstores, restaurants, movie theatres, grocery stores. I don't know about hardware stores or hobby shops, but there is a hardware store 1/2 mile north of LSE, in Streeterville, and Target fills many of those needs, too. There just aren't many hobby shops left anywhere, though.
