It comes down to being prepared, even if you don't need it for years, salt doesn't spoil. Buy when the need is low at the start of the season.
After living in Toronto, it's also a good idea to keep a bag in the trunk of your car if you lose traction, a crushed stone/sand and salt mix works best. *and a small snow shovel!
