It won't matter how nice you make it. The NIMBYs will find something to bitch about.

It's funny how they are complaining about the loss of the stores. If this land was originally vacant and the developer wanted to build the retail strip just like what is there now, the NIMBYs would be against that too, complaining about how it will bring all sorts traffic and noise. They are just irrational.

Best advice to the developer would be to just ignore them. Your project is as-of-right. Build it the way you want.
