i often both agree and disagree with kamin's articles, but i usually find them informative and thought-provoking, even when i think his conclusions are off.
to call him the "sorriest excuse for an architecture critic" seems like ridiculous hyperbole to me.

when i lived in marina city i frequently spent time up on the open air roof deck which i think is around 550' or so. it was almost always very pleasant to be up there, with the obvious exceptions of things like thunderstorms and winter, when access to the roof deck was restricted. this idea that any balcony above 500' is uselessly and obnoxiously windy at all times runs completely contrary to my experiences living at marina city.
as for the balcony issue in general, i would never live in a highrise unit that did't have a balcony. i simply
MUST have a place to grill my meats. i've lived in two highrise units over the course of my life. both of them had balconies. it's a non-negotiable thing for me, whether it's the 7th floor, the 33rd floor, or the 98th floor. meats must be grilled.
