Yeah, I can understand people being upset and it seems like this was mostly an effort to drive controversy on the basis of raw emotions, but demanding a writer be fired for an editorial that was a little questionable is wrong.

Personally I don't quite get the efforts to paint Cpl. Cirillo as a hero. He was a victim of an unprovoked bout of senseless violence that targeted him for symbolic reasons. He sounds like he was a decent person, but he didn't have time to do anything heroic. He wasn't supposed to be putting his life on the line where he was (if that was the case he probably wouldn't have been effectively unarmed). From the sounds of things he hoped to make a difference and help people, but he was killed before he had the chance.

I have full respect for the families of the victims of this violence, but that's what they were, victims. The same as the majority of victims of such violence.
