The transcontinental railroads were similar in that they sold farmland at a profit and also ensured they had a monopoly on transportation to the areas they'd developed. I don't know whether their transportation divisions alone were profitable, though, and I know that for some interurban and urban railroads like the LA Red Cars they were not.
