i'm not sure i understand what you are getting at here - if there was more after take off it would only indicate more sprawl - if you were flying west then a lot of that "nothing" is the foothills and the eastern slopes of the rocky mountains. i guess you can call that nothing.
i would prefer the neighborhoods here develop organically over time rather than try and straight out duplicate anything.
and as far as city building goes, there is a lot of work to be done here no doubt - but that is exactly what makes it so appealing to me.
