There's nothing that I can stand less than when people operate solely on ideology. Even the Parks Board member stated that he understands it will affect the business of the Aquarium. I welcome his criticisms but until he is also able to offer an alternative or options to the Aquarium's business ALONG with his proposal, I think it is dangerous for him to get the go ahead to proceed.
(Has Spencer done the research on efficacy and effectiveness of live whales in aquaria versus virtual ambassadors? Has he looked at visitor surveys that state what the main attraction is for the Vancouver Aquarium? has he researched what rehabilitation programs and conservation efforts and research that could be endangered by an underfunded aquarium? )
And another thing, the Parks Board has a written agreement - or came into a decision - that stated they were NOT to bring up the issue of whales in captivity at the Vancouver Aquarium until the current contract expires in 2015. I think this gives the Aquarium ground to sue the eff out of the Parks Board.
