No Ports Day dredge pledge

SYDNEY — Sydney’s annual Ports Day did not bring what many in the region may have hoped —an announcement that the federal and provincial governments had committed their requested shares toward the $38-million dredging of Sydney harbour.

It did bring a forceful statement from Sydney Marine Group chair Jim Wooder arguing that the dredging is not only about attracting a container terminal development, as some have suggested.

The opportunities to commercialize the harbour are defined, he said.

“The transformative potential is real and it’s now widely understood by anyone who cares to take even a cursory look at and educate themselves,” Wooder said.

Ground will be broken for new civic centre within two weeks, says society chair

NORTH SYDNEY — The company hired to build the Northside Civic Centre could be ready to break ground within two weeks, says the chair of the society.

Leo Steele, who has been leading the campaign to build a new recreation facility on the Northside for a decade, said the project is “going full speed ahead” with few complications on the horizon.

Brimming with confidence, Steele said the construction timetable remains on schedule for a March 1, 2011 opening of the facility.

Drum roll, please: Festival’s 10th anniversary celebration begins today

SYDNEY — They’ve played with Chicago, Billy Joel, Paul McCartney, Santana, Aretha Franklin, Rod Stewart, Pink Floyd, and April Wine.

And this weekend some of the biggest names in the drumming world will descend on the island for the 10th annual Cape Breton International Drum Festival. The festival gets underway tonight with a couple of master classes at the Cambridge Suites in Sydney, with the performance side of things set to get started Saturday morning at the Savoy Theatre in Glace Bay, and continue through until Sunday night.
