Major spring storm to hit Vancouver and B.C.'s south coast

Environment Canada has warned of a strong wind storm that will hit Metro Vancouver and Vancouver Island early Wednesday evening.

Strong southeast winds are expected to blow through the south coast of B.C., including Metro Vancouver, Greater Victoria, East Vancouver Island. Sunshine Coast, and the Southern Gulf Islands.

The spring storm is already having an impact on the south coast, delaying transportation and leaving thousands without power.

A fallen tree brought down power lines onto train tracks in Coquitlam, causing prolonged delays to the West Coast Express. CP Rail police and Coquitlam RCMP are on the scene, guarding the area until crews can get clear the tracks.

Meanwhile approximately 33,000 BC Hydro customers in Metro Vancouver, Fraser Valley and Sunshine Coast had no power early as of early Wednesday evening.

Winds are expected to weaken and shift southwest around midnight.

"It's an unseasonably strong storm for spring," CTV Meteorologist Jesse Mason told ctvbc.ca. "It will pack a strong punch, but it will be short-lived."
