I like the old neon signs, although I think with current tech we can do a better good, neon doesn't like our environment too much hence why the signs don't work properly in the winter. The one thing that gets me is in almost all the pictures that show the signs is the lack of people walking along the streets, it's practically every picture, sure there are cars but no pedestrians, I think we should take note of that, while neon signs will add light to an area it doesn't appear like it added much life. Heck it didn't save Chinatown or Granville.
