You don't have much to worry about. The Home Depot and Wal-Mart have been open for a couple years now, and a London Drugs anchored strip mall is in the middle of construction next to the couple year old Canadian Tire anchored mall. All three of those developments took YEARS to get through city hall. Getting ANYTHING done in that town is like pulling teeth. Except it's like getting teeth pulled 150 years ago without anesthetic or new tools. The nimbies in Squamish are second-to-none and city hall is so incredibly backward and behind the times. I've dealt with cities in middle of nowhere Saskatchewan that have a better website, GIS system (Squamish has none), and the ability to actually email something. Seriously, I needed a zoning map for an area we were looking to buy land in for a development proposal and they couldn't email it to me. It wasn't digital. They couldn't even scan it with a photocopier and email it. Or even fax it. They don't have the technology. The original had to be photocopied and mailed to me. Snail mail that is, it took 2 weeks to get it.
So yeah, you have nothing to worry about with regards to too much auto-oriented development in Squamish because doing any development period in that place takes an eternity.
