VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - TransLink says there hasn't been a big increase in checks for fare evaders on the Canada Line, despite calls to News1130 saying they've seen increased enforcement. TransLink's Derek Zabel says there's been no corporate directive ordering transit cops to be more active in weeding out cheats.

Zabel says Transit Police have been keeping an eye out for U-Pass abusers, due to issues with people apparently selling their U-Passes over Craigslist. Zabel says the price of getting caught just isn't worth it, considering the one-zone fare is $2.50, while the fine for not paying is $170.

Zabel also says criminals seem to be avoiding Canada Line too. "There's been a couple of minor cases of vandalism, which happens in different cities and regions, but so far it's been fairly quiet." Zabel says capacity on the Canada Line has been running at about 80 per cent--approximately 8,000 users per hour.
