20 jobs now, maybe hundreds in future: Officials

McMaster University today received nearly $30 million to develop robots to do less invasive surgeries and medical procedures.

The money is creating the McMaster Centre for Surgical Invention and Innovation.

For patients, federal government and McMaster officials say it means better outcomes, less time in hospital and quicker recovery.

For the Hamilton economy, it means 20 new jobs and predictions that hundreds more could follow in the next few years.

The federal government is providing $14.8 million for the project. Private corporation MDA Information Systems is providing another $14.8 million for a total of $29.6 million in funding.

Dr. Mehran Anvari will lead the team developing the robots and MDA will manufacture them. Anvari hopes the robots will soon be in every Canadian hospital
