A friend filming the event told me that what really happened is that other countries competitors walked (or threatened to), because the soft snow favored the local competitors, the Canadians... then they canceled the event.
If true, it's strange, as local conditions usually favor local riders, that's how it is. The opposite would be true in Europe as well.
