Increase in passenger traffic in 2008 takes Austin-Bergstrom International Airport past 9 million travelers for first time

AUSTIN, TEXAS – For the first time ever, 9 million passengers traveled through Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in a single year. In 2008, annual passenger traffic totaled 9,039,075, up 2 percent over the previous, record year of 2007.

New air services added in 2008 were key contributors to building passenger traffic. This included seven new nonstop destinations and two new airlines for Austin. JetBlue tripled its flight options from Austin with new nonstop destinations of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and LA/Long Beach, Calif. They also added JetBlue nonstop service to Orlando, Fla; and San Francisco, Calif. Southwest started nonstop service from Austin to three new destinations: Philadelphia, Pa., Oakland, Calif. and Fort Lauderdale, Fla. U.S. Airways connected its Charlotte, N.C. hub and Austin. International service took off with new carriers for Austin. Air Canada began service in Austin with a nonstop to Toronto. The arrival of vivaAerobus brought nonstop service to Cancun and Monterrey Mexico and marked the opening of the new South Terminal.
