Las Vegas' Fertitta Family Opens Red Rock Resort
April 18, 2006 02:36 PM PDT
The new Red Rock Resort-Casino in Summerlin opens to the public tonight at midnight.
Red Rock is considered the largest entertainment venue from Station Casinos. It's also the most lavish off-Strip casino ever built in Las Vegas.
Channel 8 Eyewitness News will take you there for an in-depth look.at noon.
(Apr. 14) -- Red Rock Resort opens Tuesday, April 18 as the result of a lot of hard work and a family business that started with an idea 30 years ago.
Frank Fertitta, of Stations Casinos said, "I was just enthralled by the whole thing."
Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta always knew what they wanted to do when they grew up.
"We got what I think is the best education you can possibly get as teenagers-- around the dinner table," Fertitta said.
Lorenzo said, "It was just part of our blood. My dad came to Vegas and started as a bellman at the Tropicana. What he found is there were a lot of people in the industry, and when they wanted somewhere to go but didn't want to mingle with the tourists."
"Back in 1976 he started a small 5,000 square foot casino on Sahara Boulevard, which eventually turned into Bingo Palace and then Palace Station," Frank said.
It was the first neighborhood casino that paved the way for a new way of thinking.
"The idea was to cater to locals instead of tourists-- I think most people thought he was crazy at the time," Frank said.
"We always try to think long-term," Lorenzo said.
The brothers started to buy land all around the valley such as the lot where new Red Rock Resort now sits.
"At the time Wall Street thought we were crazy-- they hated the idea but now they love it," Lorenzo said.
As the final touches are being put on their latest project, they say they have acquired the most valuable asset of all -- the approval of their father.
"Really, what our motto is... Is we have something for everyone," Lorenzo said
When Red Rock Resort opens on Tuesday, the Fertitta brothers say it will not be their last project.
They also say they hope to continue to make their father and their customers proud.
