The George Massey tunnel project will cost more to build and take longer to construct than the government originally promised.

Nobody, officially, is going to say that out loud. But the conclusion is inescapable after reading the provincial budget and listening to the transportation minister on the subject.

The official price tag on the project remains $4.15 billion, a figure set back in 2021 that nobody believes to be accurate anymore. Even the government.

“The tunnel project is in design, and the estimated cost of the project is being updated and reviewed as the design and contract negotiations progress,” read last week’s budget document.

It’s a bit cryptic. So allow me to translate that for you: the budget is blown....

The surrey langley skytrain had an original budget around 4 billion pre covid ....then it ballooned to 6 billion once construction started. This tunnel will be similar...it will end up costing 6 billion. I appreciate the fact that NDP invests in infrastructure but they are the worst money managers i've even seen. No cost controls whatsoever...if they stay in power for a long period they are going to bankrupt this province with their delusional policies.
