For me it was cheering on Nelson Piquet in the 80's. I was 10 years old or so, and watched races on CBC-French (usually) in the rurals of NB. English races were rarely an option, somehow, and I didn't know French. But you didn't need a language, anyway. 
I lost track of the sport in the late 90's and early 2000's, but gradually picked it up in the past 10 years again.

Have you read THE MECHANICS TALE by Steve Matchett? A good read and some good stories about Piquet. Piquet would fart while Matchett was trying to strap him into the car as a joke. Classy!
