OK - if you set aside the merits of the bill itself, you can't really blame Pritzker for this.


A) the bill passed the legislature UNANIMOUSLY. So even if Pritzker vetoed, they would absolutely override it.

B) the fact that it passed unanimously says the mayor and staff were completely ignorant of the possible fiscal issues and did nothing to stop it. they couldn't peel off a single rep in the Chicago delegation, if they even tried.

C) even if Pritzker had done a symbolic veto, it would only aggravate legislators and make it that much harder to deal with the state's other big issues (including saving Chicago transit).


I will say it's very weird to see right-wing types attack the city and state for this bill when they've spent the last decade whining about how cops are underappreciated. Pick a lane, guys.
