Well the rumour was related to a subsidiary of VW making battery materials for its previously announced St. Thomas, ON battery plant, so with the increased attention to EU trade, maybe it isn't all that far fetched.

The rumour was based on past press releases and lobbying (see lobbying registration link above that clearly lists Port SJ) by Ionway, a joint venture of Volkswagen’s battery maker, PowerCo, and global technology and recycling company Umicore.
