Under Schengen they wouldn't, because they know there would be no point.
They might if you had a non-EU plate though.
But then again we're comparing apples to oranges. There are differences within Canada that may not exist between different countries of the EU.
I suppose that maybe the best point of comparison might be at the border between France and Switzerland, near Geneva.
