They did have more planes in order. Just that the A220 have engine reliability issues and the A321XLR had been delayed. Plus the fact that travel demand bounce back much quicker than expected on both the Atlantic and Pacific sides... so they just don't have enough capacity to handle the demand until summer 2025 at least.
It's not like you can just order more planes and get it and start using them the next month. If they order now, they probably won't get them until the latter half of this decade?
