It was common at the time and up to the late 20th century to just bury bricks of buildings that were demolished. When we dug up our garden bed in our backyard there were enough buried bricks to build a 3 brick tall retaining wall that is about 15' long.

Turns out I'm a terrible mason and bricklaying is harder work than it looks.
