Vancouver: Tsui Hang Village Restaurant Closes

My apologies if this is in the wrong section, mods feel free to move it.

Thought this was interesting? Anyone know more about it's future?

"A longrunning late-night restaurant in Downtown Vancouver has quietly gone dark—without any clear indication about its status.

Tsui Hang Village Restaurant (1193 Granville Street) sits perched at the corner of Granville and Davie streets in the Downtown South neighbourhood, situated at the nexus of the West End, Yaletown, and the Granville Entertainment District."

So many drunken take outs from that place in my youth. :D

Haven't been there is a couple of decades and it had been around forever by then. Used to be one of the few places to get drinks after the bars closed down, just order the "special" tea.

Yeah, not worthy of its own thread - either goes in the restaurant thread or the downtown Vancouver thread in connection with the project proposed for the site.

How do people know the proposal for that site yet? It's not public yet.

SeymourDrake Nov 29, 2019 12:26 AM

it's got an interesting backstory. The proposal must have gone south for some reason. That was 4 years ago now these news articles appear after they close down. Maybe their lease is up or the owners want to sell it.

Looks like that for lease sign is old....

that intersection needs all the help it can get. Still has that ghetto vibe to it.

Anyone know what the height restriction is on that corner?

thx

Yeah, of all the restaurant closures this will be among the least missed food-wise. :yuck:

It would be great if someone came along to make good use of the art deco banks bones, but I doubt it. Probably some awful retail+mezzanine placeholder is in its future.

Expect more... way more.

The 2015 approved 7 storey building is probably the reference. DeeCorp seem to take projects a certain way through the process, but seldom actually develop anything.

Oh we know - they're definitely not in a rush - but round 2 on their sites look / feel promising. It really depends on the City if they can be flexible.

GenWhy? Nov 29, 2019 12:53 AM

They're usually pretty good in acquiring the neighbouring land.

GenWhy? Nov 29, 2019 12:56 AM

But agreed it's years off and closing this thread might be wise.

Wasn't Deecorp behind the "maybe its rental, maybe its a weird lease-condo thing "Eventide?

Ah yes. That was the code word.

An end of an era. We used to frequent THVR many, many times back in the day. If the party wasn't done by 2:30, ol' Hang's came in handy every time.

Yeah, that's the one I remember.

Another example of how a developer isn't too keen or in a hurry to build a low-rise building on prime real estate. If this were zoned for a 40-storey structure, this site would've been rebuilt long time ago.

Maybe they just don't have the money.

You can't always develop 5-8 properties at the same time.

If a developer doesn't have the money, it would be offered big bucks by a developer with money. It has been 4 years since the UDP review, and if there were genuine interest here, it would've happened already.

Some owners have no immediate interest in developing, even when they've obtained approval for a building. Sometimes they decide to try for something more ambitious, like the Denny's site on West Broadway. It's not like the existing buildings aren't paying rent, or at least, until the restaurant closed, that wasn't the case. The leasing notice suggests the owner isn't in a hurry to build anytime soon.
