Magnificent scenery. Never been to Switzerland, cable car trips seem a good way of spending some time and enjoy the views.

Nice job. I presume ski season was over when you took the pics.

My palms are sweaty looking at those severe elevation changes and cloudy chasm abysses.

Piz Nair is easily accessible from the heart of town. First, take the funicular up to Corviglia.

The views at Piz Nair, the highest point I could reach, were mixed. Luckily, there was a heated indoor section to warm up and wait for the skies to clear. http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...7/IMG_1346.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...7/IMG_1350.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...7/IMG_1348.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...7/IMG_1367.jpg |

The Bernina Express is one of the major reasons why visitors flock to St. Moritz. Traversing through mountains, this north-south link passes 55 tunnels and 196 bridges down to the Italian border. Parts of the line have been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status.
It is worthwhile to stop along the many stations on the line from St. Moritz to Tirano to enjoy the mountain scenery and attractions along the way. Instead of taking the real "Bernina Express", use the more frequent local trains instead, which run on the same tracks but you get much more flexibility. Some of these local trains also have windows that can open so you can take photos from both sides of the train with ease. http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0207.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0212.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0229.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0233.jpg Heading to Tirano, sit on the right side of the train as it heads towards Ospizio Bernina station. While you can walk along the waterfront, I chose the train as the two follow the same route and offer the same scenery. http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0257.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0258.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0273.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0286.jpg Alp GrĂ¼m station is located at almost 2100m and has a lovely terrace that overlooks the mountains at the station. A short walk away across the track, head uphill for more views of the rail's curvature and the valleys beyond. http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0608.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0653.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0646.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0693.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0696.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0687.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0678.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0633.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0659.jpg The train then takes a long stretch downhill towards the Italian border. Sit on the right side for lovely views of the landscape. http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0461.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0292.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0298.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0303.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0454.jpg At the bottom of the mountain, exit at Cavaglia station and walk for about 10 minutes to the glacial mills, which were shaped by glacial water rotating stones into the rock over thousands of years. http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0486.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0507.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0509.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0516.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0537.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0539.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0550.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/switzerl...6/IMG_0576.jpg More on my website : https://www.globalphotos.org/stmoritz.htm |
