Rooftop Lighting Hotel Vancouver

I’ve emailed the hotel a couple of times with no answer, but why on earth are the lights on the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver off every night? Those lights were one of the best parts of the skyline. Without them, the building blends into everything around it. The hotel is the most aesthetically pleasing piece of architecture in the city (IMO) and it’s truly a shame that it’s not showcased when The Sun goes down like it used to be.

I found out why the lights are off. This thread can be deleted now :)

The nighttime 'light pollution' bylaw killed them I believe.

They're in the midst of renos on the upper floors, so I've just assumed that's why the lights are off.

The Hotel Vancouver has been so blocked off by all the other development, I didn't even notice.

The reason is because, they were originally lit up for the hotels 50th anniversary in 1989 but the city prompted them to stay on until 2014, or until needing replacement whichever came first. And since then they haven’t replaced them. Bummer I know.

Why not replace the bulbs with cheaper LEDs? A well-lit hotel is good advertising in itself. There must be some other reasoning I reckon.

I’m just quoting what the hotel responded to my email. I’m sure there is something they’re not mentioning, ie. Vancouver’s ridiculous lighting regulations. I could see them being shut off due to complaints of light pollution from nearby nimbys or the nimby council.

.. case in point - what did it cost to install the LED strips on the Telus Garden condo
- only to have them lit at such a low level as to be imperceptible on the skyline.
