Metro Centre

Metro Centre name could be for sale

Venue needs $6 million in renovations

CBC News Posted: Nov 10, 2013 12:22 PM AT Last Updated: Nov 10, 2013 12:22 PM AT

The Metro Centre in Halifax could get a new name, for a price, if city staff gets its way.

The recommendation suggests selling the naming rights to the Metro Centre to pay for a $6 million face lift.

“We’ve got some good life left in the building but it is time to reinvest in the comfort areas,” said Trade Center Ltd. CEO Scott Ferguson.

He runs the 35–year-old venue for concerts and the Mooseheads hockey team.

The concrete and pipes under the ice need an upgrade and patrons are demanding more washrooms and better seats. Finding corporate sponsors to pay for that is up for debate.

“It’s becoming a standard in the industry. Either when you are building a new structure or when you’re looking to conduct some kind of a refit,” he said.

Think Air Canada Centre in Toronto or the newly named Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa. Soliciting companies to buy naming or advertising space on arenas owned by the public is not as common in this region, but the proposal was quickly embraced by hockey fans Mike Mahoney and Brian Tapper.

"I think it’s a great idea. Anytime we can get extra money into the economy especially Halifax right now,” said Mahoney.

“It’s good for the city. It may be $6 million we taxpayers don’t need to take on.”

Halifax already has the Emera Oval, the outdoor rink maintained by the power company.

The report to council recommends city hall start scouting for a company willing to put up $500,000 a year starting next fall.

For Metro Halifax

The $6 million project includes $2.3 million for replacing the seating, $2 million for a new centre-ice clock, $1 million for expansion to washroom facilities and $1.2 million for a new ice slab.
These are great upgrades that are needed, a new HD video screen will be nice and new seats. I think they should install some LED Ribbon board advertisements around the arena like a lot of the NHL rinks.

Replace the scoreboard? The friggin thing is only ten years old! It's out of date already?? I like the idea of new seats, and I hope washroom expansion means MORE washrooms. Whoever thought nine bathrooms for 10,000 people was adequate should be force fed beer and then have to stand in the lineups during intermission.

Halifax Metro Centre naming rights have been sold and should be announced at noon today.

Also Halifax is going after the International Men's Tennis Tournament Davis Cup.

Rename the thread:

Scotiabank Centre

Scotiabank Centre. Hmm that's gonna take some getting used to. I'm no fan of corporate names on arenas but if it leads to more bathrooms and more concession options, I can't really complain.

Hey at least it's not the Emera Center....

Nice naming! Finally, they are spending money in Nova SCOTIA.

Could you imagine? PA Announcement: "Good Evening, and welcome to Emera Centre" *cue smattering/potential chorus of boos from those who have made it to their seats*

The renovations will be done over three years. It took about that long for Madison Square Garden to be completely gutted from the inside and rebuilt to look like a more modern (and less cool and unique) arena. The Scotiabank Centre - slowly getting used to it - renos will move at a snails pace by comparison.

Still SkyDome to me. If you know what I mean.

Yup, especially in this city I fully expect everyone will keep calling it the Metro Centre no matter what... it has always amused me hearing people born in the '80s and '90s still calling the Mackay "The New Bridge"!

hfx_chris Jun 26, 2014 7:58 PM

Yeah I've actually had people question me before when I say MacKay or Macdonald bridge, they'll ask me if I mean the new or old bridge.

New signs are going up, official ribbon cutting is Friday (Mooseheads first Home Game).

Maybe a mod could rename the thread Scotiabank Centre since it's official on Friday.

It'll always be SkyDome, er Metro Centre to me ;)

^Yeah it's one of those things, the words "Metro Centre" is pretty ingrained in everyone's mind.

I think this might block the view...

Is Scotiabank somehow involved with the Metro Centre now? That sign is so subtle its hard to tell;)

I find it's kind of annoying how they used their regular "Scotiabank" wordmark but then went all out "CENTRE" ... it doesn't quite fit, it seems (coming from a professional design standpoint lol) They could've worked around lower case "centre" too. Oh well. I also think the building could use a decent paint job.. or at the very least- a good pressure-washing.

What is with the TR? It looks like something that would have been designed ten years ago.

Aya_Akai Sep 17, 2014 3:58 AM

I found this image of the Metro Centre under construction on one of the several news articles about the signage/name change today.
