No smoking at ACL

By Gary Dinges | Monday, September 12, 2011, 02:54 PM

Don’t light up during the Austin City Limits Music Festival.

That’s the word from the city’s parks department, which has prohibited smoking, as well as charcoal and wood grilling, in all city parks due to extreme drought conditions. That ban, which was put in place in April 2010, includes Zilker Park, site of this weekend’s three-day ACL Fest.

City officials say recent wildfires that devastated parts of Bastrop, Spicewood and Steiner Ranch have shown just how quickly fire can spread. That, they hope, will be on the minds of festival-goers.

About time.

It will probably be easy to enforce such a rule at an event with a three day total attendence of 225,000 people.

Yeah, unless they check every bag and every pocket, there's no way they can enforce it.

I'm not really worried about a fire danger in the park from cigarettes. You have to imagine that anything that ends up on the ground will be stepped on about a million times.

And plus, they've done a great job with the irrigation on the field and the type of grass they planted. When I was there last month for Blues on the Green, the grass was beautiful and in good shape. A lot of people were walking barefoot in it, myself included. Except for a few ants, it was like walking on carpet.

My worry is that they would have another fire like was there a few years ago. Something like a generator or one of the food vendors is something I worry about.

Trust me. A concert in Austin WILL have "smokers" of various types.

Some people are actually selling their wristbands because they would rather smoke than to attend a great event. :haha: Now is the chance if you didn't get a wristband before it was sold out.

KevinFromTexas Sep 13, 2011 10:16 PM

Couldn't they just bring some brownies or cookies? lol

Funny. I got in one year for free after a girl gave my brother her wristband at his work. My brother and his girlfriend didn't have another one, so they weren't planning to go, so they gave it to me. It actually fit me and I was able to go.

Ya, and we will also see pigs flying over the show. :)

Anyway, if anyone is going to be unable to make the festivities it will be streaming live on YouTube so you can still enjoy it at home, on your phones or iPads or what have you.

Just click HERE and bookmark and check in on its channel this weekend to see the stream. There should be a couple channels that will be showing bands playing.
