Petition for B.C. statutory holiday in February commemorating Olympics

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - An online petition is aiming to give B.C. a statutory holiday in February in honour of the 2010 winter Olympics.

Petition creator Kate Holmes is proposing the third Monday of every February be called 'Glowing Hearts Day'. "Having a day to help celebrate and remember our great Olympic experience, it sort of morphed into a provincial holiday, because I know lots of people in B.C. have been hoping for a February holiday anyway. So, we just thought we could capitalize on that and really make it our own."

B.C. doesn't have a February holiday even though other provinces celebrate Family Day, Louis Riel Day and Islander Day. So far there are over 400 online signatures.

Hmmmm, why don't we just make February 15th, which is Flag Day in Canada, a statutory holiday. It's more in keeping with Canadian pride spurred by Olympics rather than something I see as a little cheesy like Glowing Hearts Day.

Exactly.

Glowing Hearts Day? Gimme a break. It will quickly become known as Blowing Farts Day. :jester:

Flag Day would be good.

Personally, I think we should just make February 28th a national stat holiday. It would be called National Hockey Day. I mean, in all honesty, that would be the best day to make a stat especially considering the day will be forever etched into our memory as the day we won Olympic hockey gold in Canada (something that will probably never happen again!). After all, it is our national winter sport and should be celebrated with its own day.

Oh look. The Olympics have officially jumped the shark.

Yume-sama Mar 6, 2010 5:58 PM

Can they do that even though they are a week over :P

Not that I'm one to nitpick the meaning of "jumping the shark"...

Just know The Fonz disapproves.

Maybe starting next year: February is the only month that does not have a statutory holiday, or "bank holiday" as they are called in the UK.

(Here in France, we get loads of long weekends.......) ;)

February 28th: Sidney Crosby Day.

It's so obvious.

I vote that everyone is forced to work the last Sunday in February, to commemorate the hard work that our athletes did. We can call it own the podium day, with all salaries and company earnings that day going to the own the podium fund. :whip:

Every year at this time we hear the same thing, maybe we should switch to the Chinese calendar so that new years isn't so close to Christmas and we will stop whining about the long stretch without a stat.
