Creative Future for Downtown Hamilton?
I'd be interested to hear opinions on this little article on the future of downtown Hamilton as a potential capital of creative industry: http://social.aking.ca/post/140984791
Missing any major components? Way off mark? Counter-arguments? Help me hone this thing! (I'm likely publishing it on a larger blog once I feel it's ready.) You can comment on that page using Disqus if you like, as well as here. Quote:

Exactly. I suspect this article was written by an out-of-towner. Everyone gets it but us. Everyone sees our potential but our own council and staff. |
I just noticed you wrote it. Very well done.
I'd separate out Low Cost and Urban Amenities. The two are important enough to deserve their own bullet point. Low Cost is a no brainer. Due to our variety of housing options. Urban Amenities. Education options McMaster, Mohawk, Brock Opera Co. Symphony Co. Theatre Aquarius Pro Sports AGH Museums Nature/geography within urban area Harbour Marinas Convention Centre Copps Coliseum History and architecture and Hospitals, lots of them and specialized These things Halton and Mississauga don't have but they are thriving. It's our USP (unique selling proposition) that we offer and promise. |
Hm, OK. Thanks! I may do that separation. It's really the combination of those two that is the driver though. Low cost you can get in many other small cities and towns, but Hamilton has those prices in a "big city" setting, which is the unusual thing.
I'd say Mississauga has comparable amenities to some of those you listed though... education (UofT Miss., Sheridan, Everest) and theatre companies. No? All the rest are great though, and duly noted! And you guessed it — I'm not from Hamilton. I've had the same thing happen in Brantford. I see potential in places where most born-and-raised Brantfordites can't. Funny the way that works. |
Interesting read. Just one minor correction - the Premier's seat is in Ottawa, not Toronto.

Is it really? Wow, how embarrassing. Glad you caught that!
