Rain barrels on sale

Buy your own rain barrel Saturday morning starting at 8 a.m. as the City of Hamilton’s water and wastewater division holds a one-day sale.

As part of water conservation efforts, 1,200 rain barrels will be sold to Hamilton residents on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The Raincatcher 4000 Model — which holds 54 gallons or 205 litres —cost $55, or $35 for residents who agree to do a customer satisfaction survey in the fall.

Sales are cash only.

Participants need to bring a copy of their water bill, in order to confirm residency, to 330 Wentworth St. N.

Excellent deal should take advantage!

This is great news! I have said for a long time that a rain barrel under every downspout would do wonders for our waste treatment capacity - much more than a new treatment plant. Even if you don't use the barrel to water plants, simply putting a barrel under your downspout and letting the water trickle into your yard over 24 hours can do wonders to relieve basement water problems and water treatment expenses at the municipal level.

This is a great deal... these barrels probably retail for $80-100.

for those who miss it, I sell rain barrels all season long for $55 ($65 delivered). They are constructed from recycled food grade drums - much more robust than the commercially produced barrels (mine froze solid one year and still don't leak a drop). I also do rain barrel construction workshops for anyone interested in the how and why of rain collection :-)

Hey Sean, put me down for a rain barrel too. This is going to save me a ton on watering my garden this summer. I guess I'll have to get on my landlords to fix the eavestrough for this to really work.

If I had have known that the city was going to sell them I wouldn't have went to the trouble of making my own a couple of months ago. For $35 it is an excellent deal. I just couldn't see spending $100 or more at Canadian Tire for one.
