Winnipeg crime rate continues to decline
 

I know there are a few forumers here who are adamant that Winnipeg is a warzone. So I thought this would be interesting..

Crime stats released by the Winnipeg Police show an overall drop in the crime rate of 16% compared to last year.

Most notable is the drop in auto thefts... actual motor vehicle thefts are down 49%; attempted auto thefts are down 20%.

The sexual assault rate is down 38%.

Residential break-and-enters are nearly unchanged, at a slight drop of 2%. Commercial B & E's are down 29%.

It's not all good news though... shootings are up 100%, while Robberies are up 50%.

^ the recent robberies/muggings are certainly concerning.

But as long as the auto theft stat keeps dropping like this, it will hopefully take Winnipeg out of the top 5 spots in that inane annual Maclains "crime" issue.

For whatever reason Maclains considers auto theft to be a "benchmark" crime. The conspiracy theorist in me figures that they probably do that to help skew the stats for high crime rates to cities out west...

drew also canada has low crime as it is so its part of the sensationalist thing of making the numbers look higher then they realy are

also if u go on crime stat (www.winnipeg.ca/crimestat) you can go back several years and see the drop we have seen in this city in the last 4 years witch if u take the the autotheft numbers out is still quiate substantial

I don't believe the official crime stats. If the crime rate were really declining, then how do the Police make the increased graffiti tagging in south Winnipeg (just look at Stafford St., Grant Ave., Taylor Ave.), and the increase in all these fires (mainly arson?) happening all across Winnipeg and in areas that you wouldn't normally expect fires.


My God, even the Assiniboine Park train infrastructure has been torched in the past few weeks. What is that all about?

Maybe you're referring to Maclean's.

Then how do the Police make what? Did you forget to ask your question, or are you inferring the Police are "making" the graffiti and fires?

Winnipeg's Crime Stat website does not include all types of crimes, and IIRC only recently did they start adding the more violent crimes. However, they still have to include "General" Assaults and random acts of violence, for example.

My own impression, without stats to back it up, is that the deputizing of the Downtown Biz "red shirts" has been a good thing to help reduce some downtown crime and vagrancy. Still much work to be done, of course.

Now, lets get more officers walking the beat. Must say, I like what I've heard from Chief McCaskill in this regard, thus far, and hope that the plan is fully implemented.
