Electrical power will be shut off in Hamilton for three hours today in an emergency shutdown.

Hydro One will cut power at 5 p.m. to an area that stretches from Burlington Street to the Escarpment, between Kenilworth and Gage.

The utility is repairing a transformer. Power is expected to be restored at 8 p.m.

Copper theft forces emergency repair of transformer

January 13, 2009

A copper theft is forcing an emergency repair at a major hydro transformer station in east Hamilton.

Hydro One has cancelled a plan to shut down power to over 2,000 east Hamilton residents because repair crews figured out a way to replace stolen copper grounding wire without a power outage, said Hydro One spokesman Daffyd Roderick.

Roderick said thieves had stolen copper wire that grounded the Kenilworth Transformer Station.

“The theft was discovered this afternoon and we need to shut down the station,” said Hydro One spokesman Daffyd Roderick.

The transformer station must be grounded to prevent dangerous voltage fluctuation, he said.

When was the copper stolen?? It's now only worth 25% of what it was 6 - 8 months ago. The scrap guys don't want any new material now, so it's not really worth stealing anymore.

Apparently someone has been stealing manhole covers in the Haldimand county lately as well.

Wow, this is taking it a little far.

Sad greed has taken over like this. :(

The last I heard no one or a vehicle has been injured or damaged....yet.... but that can change in a flash. What if a small child falls down. Especially with the frigid temps right now :(

Police are warning mischief-makers they are endangering others, not being funny, after a number of manhole grates were removed in the town.

Haldimand OPP say the incidents happened before Christmas in the Church-Shering-Elm street area in Hagersville.

"This is extremely dangerous for vehicles and pedestrians," police said in a press release. "This type of mischief can cause serious damage and injury.

"If you see a suspicious person fooling with the manhole covers, please contact police."

Police ask you call 1-888-310-1122 if you see something unusual.
