22-Story Mixed-Use Tower Planned for West El Paso

A Florida based developer plans to build a mixed-use tower in West El Paso in the coming years, according to City documents. The 22-story highrise will go up near the corner of Sunland Park Drive and Mesa Street on a currently vacant lot, on Shadow Mountain Drive.

The tower will be a mix of hotel and apartment units, with retail proposed for the ground floor. It will rise 256 feet, making it the second tallest building in El Paso. The Wells Fargo building in Downtown El Paso is 296 feet tall.

Plans are to create 228 apartment units and 219 hotel units, with residences located on the 11th floor and above. The hotel rooms will be located from the second to the tenth floors.

The ground floor lobby areas will be accompanied by 42,000 square feet of retail space. A five story garage will provide over 700 parking spaces for the development.

City Approves Shadow Mountain Tower for West El Paso

On Tuesday, City Council unanimously approved a rezoning request allowing the project to move forward based on the project’s ability to grow the commercial tax base and reduce the residential tax burden for El Pasoans.

“We are thankful to the City Council for their decision which allows this transformational project to move forward,” said Josh Meyers, vice-president of the Meyers Group. “We fully respect the community’s concerns and the Council’s need to take extra time to make this important decision.”

El Paso City Council approved a rezoning request from Commerical to General Mixed Use. The old zoning would have allowed commercial development including a self-service car wash, concrete mixing plant, or minor motor vehicle repair facility. Instead, with this new zoning designation, the Meyers Group will move forward with plan to build a mixed-use high-rise including a retail, apartments, and a luxury hotel.

Despite not being in downtown, it's nice to see another city in texas get on the hirise train! El Paso is so far out of the way I've never had the chance to visit, but really want to. Seems like they are doing a lot of things right.

Good to see something, but El Paso really needs a good 500 footer downtown to make the skyline more significant. Nice building though

Meyers Group to Build Two High-Rises in West El Paso

Plans for a controversial 22-story tower in West El Paso have changed. The Meyers Group, which is the Miami-based firm behind the development, will now build two towers near Shadow Mountain Drive and North Mesa Street.

Before the Meyers Group got the approval from council last year to change the zoning on the four-acre lot from commercial use to general mixed use, there was a lot of us pushback back from Westside residents over the prospect of a massive building causing more traffic along the already congested area.

There were also concerns over the apartment-hotel building people’s views of the mountains.

“We originally started out with a high-end rental. That's what we were designing before. The whole concept has basically changed. We turned that into two narrower buildings with open spaces between them," said Richard Lamondin, Executive Vice President for the Meyers Group.

Lamondin says the first tower will be for condos, that'll range between $1 million-$2 million.

He explains that phase one includes: 80 condos with a private elevator, an infinity pool, and a theater. The second tower will feature a boutique hotel.

EP certainly has the population. Census will list it at 680k, but everyone there knows it's closer to 900k. The city simply lacks any investment from corporations to make it appear like a major metro area. The skyline will always look small relative to the actual size of the area.

Don't forget Fort Worth. Until 2007 they had three buildings that were taller than Austin's tallest. Of, course, we've reversed that since then.
