Coffee Matters looks to be closed and there's a poutine restaurant opening on Water Street.

Marty_Mcfly Apr 20, 2012 1:47 PM

Coffee Matters is still open, I know someone who was there last night actually. The Poutine shop is called Smokey's Poutinerie, and it's a part of an Atlantic Canadian chain I believe. Do you know the address of their store? I think it's going to be on Duckworth street?

A specialty burger shop is also opening downtown this summer. Also a chain, Relish will be located in the abandoned building currently sitting on the corner of Water, Waldegrave, Harbour drive, and George Street W. (the building right next to the Ultramar gas station).

I walked Water Street last night and I can tell you that it's definitely on Water. I actually remember commenting on it and saying I didn't think it was possible for a specialty restaurant to survive on poutines. I know for certain i was on the east end of water towards Job's Cove/Baird's Cove. I'm trying to use Google Streetview to remember which building it was, but I'm drawing a blank on it.

It will be on the south side of Water Street around where the Asian Variety store used to be by that little alley that leads down to the parking lot off Harbour Dr.

There was paper over all the windows of Coffee Matters the other day when I went by, I figured they closed.

Smokey's Poutine is going on Water Street near the Fortis Building.

Looks like I'll have plenty to try when I get back in August.

Smoke's Poutinerie is an Ontario-based poutine chain. They've just recently expanded to Atlantic Canada, I believe one opened in Halifax back in the fall. Here is a link to their website:

The burger place opening up on Waldegrave is called Relish Burger. I'm a huge fan of burgers so I can't wait for this place to open! Check out their website:

That's weird. Is that the location up by the Sheraton?

I noticed that the space behind Starbucks on Kenmount Rd. will be a Menchie's Frozen Yogurt store, a sign was posted in the window.

I noticed this. Upon looking in to the franchise a little further, it appears this store will be the only location east of Toronto for this chain.

Nice to see they'll use real curds (of course they will, being that it's what they do). I can't believe how many places here just shred some cheddar onto fries and gravy and call it poutine (Ches's, for instance). Really, even KFC uses curds!

Looking forward to this one. Fog City is alright, but it'll be nice to have a true top-notch burger joint in town.

I prefer shredded cheese.

Some of those poutines look a bit over the top, I cannot wait to try them. There's very few fast food restaurants downtow.

Marty_Mcfly Apr 21, 2012 12:45 PM

I'm all about poutine, especially REAL poutine. Enough of this shredded cheese mess, give me cheese curds and make me happy!

The Zellers that is closing on Topsail Road next to the village will reportedly become a Wal-Mart express.

Really? I was under the impression that all Zellers locations would be converted in to Target stores.

EDIT: Looks like Target sold their Topsail road location to Wal-Mart, interesting.

techie Apr 27, 2012 9:25 PM

89,000 square feet of Walmart. That's a lot of space for an "express".

Not sure if it will be an "express" store, but this seems to confirm that it will be a walmart:
http://interstratics.com/targetcanad...uisitions.html

The Zellers on Stavanger will be a Target. I guess walmart is stepping up their presence to compete with Target. Funny considering they moved their old store in the village a few years ago which was across the street.

Arrakis Apr 28, 2012 3:28 AM

Walmart bought out the lease from Target for the old Zellers store on Hamlyn Road as Target did not want that space. I think I heard that Walmart is experimenting with a new smaller concept in Canada called Walmart Urban 90 which utilizes a smaller space than the regular size Walmart stores.

Arrakis Apr 28, 2012 3:31 AM

I would say once Target is firmly established in Canada and Newfoundland, you will see other Target Stores opening. Most likely in either the Kelsey Drive area or in the new Southlands Big Box area which is suppose to start construction this year. Time will tell.

Marty_Mcfly Apr 28, 2012 5:42 PM

I noticed that Wingin' It is opening a second St. John's restaurant on Kenmount Road. It's in the newish strip mall building that's been vacant for many years just west of Kelsey Drive. Looks like it's going to be a pretty big location, so I have no excuse not to try and go there now ;)

Marty_Mcfly Apr 28, 2012 6:28 PM

I've updated the main page with a list of up and coming retail openings around town, along with a link to a google map. The list isn't extensive at all, so if anyone can think of anything I haven't thought of please post (there's a lot I know, so lets brainstorm an extensive list). I can also add businesses that are already open around town. It'd be impossible to list every store in town, so I'll just try and add any notable stores.

I heard on the radio this weekend that the new Wingin' It location will be at 93 Kenmount Rd. Apparently it's where the old Taiwan restaurant used to be. I guess they'll have a lot more space than the downtown location, also less hassle with parking! I Google mapped it below:

Yes, it definitely is a step up in size. The old Taiwan restaurant building was demolished in favor for a strip mall styled development with about 4 or 5 stores. But as of right now Wingin' It is the only business opening in that complex.

I'm surprised it has been vacant so long as it sits on the doorstep of Kenmount Terrace/Bristolwood/Westgate.

It's in a prime location, next to a booming neighbourhood as well as huge big box center, I can't imagine why it's sat vacant for this long. I would assume businesses would be flocking to the building.

Hmmm... with Wingin' It's huge popularity maybe it will serve as a somewhat anchor tenant and thus help bring more businesses to that complex. I think it's a great spot to open a restaurant; there is a large residential (e.g. Kenmount Terrace/Bristolwood) and business (e.g. Kenmount/Kelsey) population it can serve. The potential to do well is definitely there.

So, what's happening to Kenmount Road Swiss Chalet? Was supposed to reopen in the spring?
Doesn't look anywhere near to re-opening. Heard a rumour that they might not re-open, instead build a new restaurant in the Kelsey Drive area.

Yes I think they're inquiring about building a new restaurant on Kelsey Drive. This is a smart move on their part. Even if the building has been completely remodeled and cleaned, they may never get their original clientele back at the Kenmount location. Opening in a new building will probably help with that problem.

Arrakis May 1, 2012 1:57 PM

According to the Smart Centres website, there is a piece of property available in front on Mark's Work Wearhouse entrance marked with a number 10 on the site map. That is probably a good location for Swiss Chalet. Here is a link to the site plan for Kelsey Drive. Though I think this site map needs to be updated as some newer stores have since gone there.

I was at Mark's over the weekend and noticed the area where unit 10 is located on the map has been cleared away and surveying pegs in the ground. This seems like a good spot for Swiss Chalet to set up shop, and also very strategic on their part to rid themselves of the old location.

techie May 1, 2012 9:21 PM

An excavator was there during the winter to dig some test holes, presumably for a geotechnical report for a new building. It could be Swiss chalet. Also, there is still a lot left to be developed directly between the Staples and WokBox. That location would work as well.

There's a lot left in front of Staples? I hadn't noticed that, but it seems like it would become very crowded if a building were placed in that spot. Just from a purely aesthetic point of view. I'm trying to picture a building there and its not working for me, although I vaguely recall an unpaved section in the middle of the parking lot now that I really think about it. That said, it might be a better spot considering that's the same side as the other restaurants on Kelsey (Boston Pizza, Wok Box and Subway), though its not like the opposite side is far away. Either way good call on relocating. Once you get a reputation for rats or bad vibe etc... it sticks forever.

I remember when I lived in Sydney N.S. there was a McDonald's which had been the site of a murder. After that business trailed off and eventually a new restaurant was built about 500 metres away in a neighbouring parking lot. Picked up again after that.

statbass May 3, 2012 11:12 AM

People have been wondering this for a while. Moxies ads have been on NTV for a while now, but I think it was passed off as Global-sold advertising that NTV has to air. However, if Moxies is now sponsoring shows on NTV that could be signs of a potential new restaurant. I know the old rumors about them opening on Stavanger proved to be false, as Montana's is now currently in that location.

A couple of weeks back I posted a link to the Field Power Centre (the one where Empire Theatres is setting up shop). One of the attachments contained a restaurant pad site with 5 lots. According to the PDF there are only 2 sites left for sale. Chains such as Moxie's typically set up in retail centres, and we definitely know it won't be another Montana's or Boston Pizza. With Empire Theatres anchoring this development, it'd be interesting to see what will go there. I've attached the PDF again for quick reference:

What is a "pad site"? A graded lot that the restaurant can lease and build on?

To be honest, I'm not sure what a pad site is either, just quoting what was on the PDF document. If I were to guess, I'd say it's an area dedicated for restaurant development only.

Architype May 6, 2012 9:55 PM

"A pad site is a freestanding parcel of commercial real estate located in the front of a larger shopping center or strip mall. Desirable because of their visibility to consumers. . ."

Well let's see. There is already a McDonald's (two if you count the one in Walmart), Burger King, A&W, KFC, Subway, Montana's, Boston Pizza, Pizza Delight, Swiss Chalet, Starbucks and Second Cup already set up in the east end. Hopefully it will be something new over at the Field Power Centre when that area opens up. I am kinda hoping for a Harvey's or Arby's. A Jack Astor's would be nice too. Time will tell I suppose.

It would be nice to see Arby's make its way back to the city. I'm not a huge fan of Harvey's, but I only had it once while I was in Charlottetown last year. Love to see Taco Bell set up shop somewhere ...

I also saw an ad for Moxies on CBC this evening, so there's a possibility that there could be a location opening in the near future.

Was just out for a lunchtime stroll on Water Street and noticed that the old Melendy's building on the corner of Adelaide and Water Street is being totally gutted and renovated and in the window is sitting an illustration of a "Second Cup" coffee shop designed for that location. Anyone know of a confirmation of this?

I haven't heard anything about a new Second Cup opening. It'd be great to get another one though seeing there's currently only two in the city. I think Second Cup would do well downtown.

As thought Swiss Chalet will not reopen their Kenmount Road location.

I hope they're planning to occupy a site as large as the Kenmount Rd location. The one on Stavanger is considerably smaller than the Kenmount Rd site, if that's the typical size. The Kenmount Rd. site was always busy and had a couple of large "group" areas that were popular.
