Wish they would just keep going west with the construction.

If there were any net gain/revenue from selling all those park passes and that Parks Canada gets to keep it, sure...

Photo Radar on Certain Highways?
 

I can't recall if I mentioned it earlier, but a couple of months ago I received an online survey request regarding my opinions on various types of photo radar and other speed limiting options for BC. I'm guessing that the province may be looking at returning to photo radar use.

Time to vote the government out (in 2021)

Man NDP really loves that stuff, doesn’t it? BC, ON are examples.

Memory is getting hazy... wasn't it the Clark NDP that initiated the first round of highway photo radar in BC? I remember it being on the Coquihalla many years ago, and I think it was the Campbell government that got rid of it.

The two do not connect as the portion through Craigellachie is jot four-laned yet. There are not any near-term plans for this on the ministry list of projects.

Avoca Road to Crazy Creek, 3.5 km of four-laning, had been completed some years earlier to the east of the North Fork four-laning, and the two together make about 7 km of four-laned straight-away. To the west of Malaka was four-laning from the Socred days, with nice grass medians.

The Clanwilliam Overhead and several kilometres of four-laning was completed in 2013, far to the east, 10 km from Revelstoke.1

I don't find the area around Craigellachie that bad. at least from that point to the four lane section at Malakwa it's relatively straight and flat. Further east towards Three Valley Gap there needs to be some improvements made

Why didn't they build it to full freeway standard.

With the North Fork Bridge completion, there are no more truss bridges on the Trans Canada on the BC Mainland. Wonderful news! Once Craigellachie is 4 laned, there will be probably 15km continuous 4 lanes. Theres still years and years worth of work to go in order to upgrade the entire highway, but a lot of the really hairy sections have been taken care of at this point. Still a few more narrow bridges to be replaced, but the truss ones were definitely the worst.

Yes they're replacing a lot of those old truss bridges as they reach the end of their lifespans or the highway gets upgraded. Still a number of them on other highways but their numbers are dwindling. I kind-of miss them. They were ubiquitous at one point and they still remind me of family road trip vacations when I was a kid

I love those old chord truss bridges, but the ones on the Trans Canada were sketchy as hell. There are still several along Hwy 3 in the Kootenays, including a beautifully preserved one (circa 1957) in Grand Forks. They were built mainly between 1947 and 1963, however one was built on Hwy 33 at Westbridge in the late 70s. Most have had their front archway removed to increase the height clearance.

Another thing I like about the old bridges, both truss and non truss, is the decorative steel railings. They each have different art deco buttress designs with the date of construction engraved in. These style bridges were built between the 1940s and about 1970 when new construction switched to tube rails. Then to jersey barrier style railings in the 1980s, which are mainly used today.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – BC Hydro says that motorists travelling along Highway 29 between Fort St. John and Hudson’s Hope are advised to expect possible delays as crews start realigning approximately four kilometres of Highway 29 in the western part of the Cache Creek/Bear Flat area.

The highway realignment is being completed in tandem with the Site C dam and will be managed by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. More work will occur in 2020 to realign the eastern six-kilometre section of Cache Creek/Bear Flat along a new alignment that was chosen earlier this year to minimize disrupting First Nations cultural sites.

The work is scheduled to take place seven days per week, typically between the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Drivers can expect some intermittent periods of single lane alternating traffic starting in mid-October. To ensure the safety of the public and workers, motorists are advised to watch for traffic control personnel and signs that indicate active work areas.


The creation of the Site C reservoir will require six segments of Highway 29 to be realigned over a total distance of approximately 30 kilometres. This work is now underway and will continue through 2024.

I've only been along Highway 29 once, but I was just a kid and don't remember a whole lot. Sounds like much of it will end up right next to the reservoir. Hopefully there will be new recreation opportunities along there.

I'm new here, but have read back a bit in this interesting thread. One thing I have seen mentioned multiple times, and I'm gonna mention again, is: BC needs more twinned highways, instead of 4 lanes! This is something that has always irked me about a lot of highways built in the last 20ish years. From what I remember, the last proper divided highway BC built was Hwy 1 thru Monte Creek around 1997. There's really no reason most sections of the Cariboo Connector couldn't be built as a proper divided highway! As well as Hwy 5A from Merritt to Aspen Grove. And Hwy 1 from Donald to Golden, Malakwa to Sicamous and Chase to Monte Creek. Most of the other sections of the Trans Canada would have to be 4 lanes with median barrier anyways due to terrain. But I mean come on now, if the terrain allows it, twin the highway! Or at least have a median barrier where it can't be twinned! No more of these undivided paved flush medians, unless, maybe, its an arterial highway in a town.

Oh and the South Fraser Perimeter Road! Why isn't it a twinned highway instead of being 4 lanes with a barrier? Just a waste of concrete where there could be a nice grass median. However, the SFPR has much bigger issues than the median LOL!
